You now have two new habits: wearing your pedometer every day, and logging in your steps every day. I wish I could say that the pedometers were highly accurate. They are not. However, they provide a useful starting point for understanding how active you are from day to day.

Sometime in the next week or so, I would like for you to find out how accurate your particular pedometer is for your activity level.
  1. Find a pathway that you walk frequently. A corridor in your house, or at work. 
  2. See what your starting pedometer count is. 
  3. Walk the pathway, and count how many steps you take. 
  4. See what the difference is between your mental count and your pedometer count. 
  5. Do this several times, over the week, so that you come up with an average.

Have you thought about making a security line? I took some ribbon, looped it through the clip, and tied that to a safety pin. So, when I change pants, I resecure the pedometer so it doesn't get lost. Just an idea!

Is it harder to get your steps in when the weather is so cold? Or easier? Or does it not make a difference either way? For myself, sometimes knowing that it's really cold outside makes me want to stay inside. Then, I get over myself, bundle up, and do my walks.

Ten days into 2013. Are you drinking enough water? Conventional wisdom says to drink 8 cups a day. I've been trying to drink more before and after taking a walk (helps hydrate me), and with meals (helps to make me to feel fuller, and not eat as much)

One strategy to increase your daily step count, is to periodically check your count throughout the day, and take a few minutes to just do some extra steps. Last night, as it was getting close to bedtime, I noticed that I was about 400 steps short of my daily goal. It was too cold to go outside, so I just walked around my living room!

So, how are you doing? Are you finding any patterns in your steps? More on weekdays? Or more on weekends? More in the morning, or in the evening? I ran a lot of errands yesterday, and generally parked farther away from my destination, so that I was required to walk more. More steps, and less frustration trying to find a parking space!

Are you starting to see patterns in how your steps accumulate? Bruce's comment yesterday noted that most of his steps came after work. One strategy to increase steps is to take an active break, during periods of inactivity. Are your steps lagging before lunch? Why not walk around for 10 minutes to get your step count up, as well as increase your energy?
